A three-year-old boy has died in Texas after shooting himself with a gun at his own birthday celebration, authorities said.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said that the shooting occurred at around 4:15 p.m. Saturday.

“Family and friends had gathered earlier to celebrate the birthday of the three-year-old, and while playing cards, heard a gunshot,” authorities said. “The child was located with a gunshot wound to the chest.”

They said he shot himself after it fell out of a relative’s pocket. He was rushed to a nearby fire station, where he died from his injuries, authorities said.
