5 dead in Vienna shooting, attacker sympathized with IS

At least one 20-year-old Islamic extremist rampaged through a crowded Vienna nightlife district, leaving four people dead before being killed by police, Austrian authorities said.

The man was heavily armed.

The country’s interior minister and chancellor called the shooting an “Islamist terror attack.”

“This is the hardest day for Austria for many years,” said Karl Nehammer at a press conference in the early hours of Tuesday.

The police said at least one heavily armed attacker opened fire in the city center.
