France reverses ban on use of chokehold after police protests

France has reversed a ban on police using the chokehold when arresting suspects after police unions protested against the decision.

The volte-face comes days after the interior minister, Christophe Castaner, announced the controversial technique was to be dropped after two weeks of French protests following the death of George Floyd in the United States.

The ban, which Castaner outlined in a letter to police unions, also followed a report last week from the directors of the national police and gendarmerie suggesting “the techniques known as ‘the chokehold’ should no longer be taught or used”. It sparked immediate anger from officers.
