The Democrat is going into the presidential race with US Senator Harris. The black politician would become the first female vice president of the US if she wins the election.
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has selected Senator Kamala Harris as his candidate for vice president. This was announced by his election campaign team on Tuesday. Harris will speak publicly on Wednesday. Biden described Harris on Twitter as a “fearless fighter”.
Should Biden prevail against Trump in November, Harris would be the first female Vice President in US history and the first black woman to hold the post.
The senator, who in the meantime had run for the presidential candidacy of the US Democrats, is one of the most famous black politicians in the country and has a lot of experience. For years she was the attorney general and thus attorney general of California. She has represented the state in the US Senate since 2017. Harris is the second black in history to be elected to the US Senate.
The 55-year-old Harris was in the running for the presidential candidate of the Democrats last year. When her election campaign kicked off in January, she drummed up more than 20,000 viewers in her hometown of Oakland and scored points in the first TV debate. However, she was unable to maintain the initial momentum. She withdrew her candidacy at the beginning of December.
The daughter of parents from Jamaica and India is considered aggressive, which is seen in the election campaign with vice candidates. Biden himself had already felt her attacks. In TV debates in the primary campaign, she accused him of making benevolent statements to senators who had advocated racial segregation decades ago. After their exit from the primary race, however, they reconciled and Harris stood behind Biden.
The 77-year-old Biden had already announced in mid-March that if he won the election, he would make a woman vice-president. The election will take place on November 3rd. Biden is currently well ahead of incumbent Donald Trump in polls. Because of the complicated electoral system, however, these forecasts should be treated with caution. In addition, experience has shown that a lot can happen in the US in the weeks leading up to the election.
