Pentagon moves 1,600 troops to Washington

The Pentagon moved about 1,600 troops to the Washington area to respond to protests over the death of George Floyd in the custody of Minneapolis police officers.

“Active duty elements are postured on military bases in the National Capitol Region but are not in Washington, D.C.,” Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Rath Hoffman said in a statement. “They are on heightened alert status but remain under Title X authority and are not participating in defense support to civil authority operations.”

The former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for the death of George Floyd.
