Brazil has surpassed 2 million confirmed coronavirus cases, according to official data.
In recent weeks, there have been nearly 40,000 confirmed new cases per day, according to figures by the health ministry.
On Thursday, confirmed cases in Brazil totaled 2,012,151, 76,688 people died from the disease.
“Two million is a symbolic number because we don’t have wide-scale testing,” infectious disease expert from the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo, Jean Gorinchteyn told AFP. “There are probably four or five times more. The most pessimistic projections signal up to 10 times more.”
Brazil has the world’s second-largest outbreak behind the United States.
