Google Maps adds accommodation finder for medical staff

Google is adding a new Maps feature to help medical workers to find free or discounted hotel rooms.

Medical workers will be able to use a new filter in Google Maps, as well as through the main Google search, to help them find available accommodation.

The workers can type phrases like “hotels for essential workers in New York”. Another option is to use a less specific phrase like “hotels in New York,” and then apply the new “COVID-19 responder rooms” filter Google has added to Maps.

Google said it is working with partners including Choice Hotels International, Hilton, and IHG Hotels & Resorts, as well as the American Hotel & Lodging Association.

Currently, the new feature is only available in the US and UK, but Google plans to roll it out to other countries in the future.
