Most countries failing to protect women from COVID-19 impact: UN

Most countries are failing to protect women from the economic and social impact caused by the coronavirus pandemic, according to a UN database.

The data shows that only one in eight countries have brought in measures to specifically protect women.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is hitting women hard – as victims of domestic violence locked down with their abusers, as unpaid caregivers in families and communities and as workers in jobs that lack social protection,” U.N. Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said.

The database also shows that higher-income countries were more likely to have taken action to protect women and girls.
