Twitter CEO pledges $1 billion for COVID-19 relief effort

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said on Tuesday that he will donate $1 billion worth of equity in Square to his Start Small LLC to fund COVID-19 relief around the world.

“Why now? The needs are increasingly urgent, and I want to see the impact in my lifetime,” Dorsey said. “I hope this inspires others to do something similar. Life is too short, so let’s do everything we can today to help people now.”

It’s the largest pledged gift by a private individual yet during the pandemic, Forbes claimed. Dorsey made the announcement in a tweet, revealing that the sum equates to roughly 28 percent of his current net worth.

Dorsey said that after the pandemic ends, the fund would focus on health and education for girls and “universal basic income” efforts.
