Serbian Orthodox Patriarch dies of COVID-19

The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church has died after contracting coronavirus, President Aleksandar Vucic said on Instagram.

The 90-year-old Patriarch Irinej had led a public funeral in November for the most senior cleric in Montenegro who also died of coronavirus.

“I was honored to know you. People like you never depart,” Vucic wrote.

“We will inform the public on other details about the funeral of his Holiness shortly”, the church statement said.

Patriarch Irinej was hospitalized on November 4.
