The chaos caused by the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus has already led to numerous sports events being canceled or postponed in China. Now the wider sports community is beginning to feel the effects.
On Monday, the LPGA Tour became the latest official sports association to cancel major events in the 2020 calendar due to growing concerns about the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus. After the HSBC Women’s World Cup in Singapore and LPGA Thailand were canceled this month, the US LPGA tour had to end three of its most lucrative events in Asia after the Chinese Blue Bay tournament was canceled 10 days earlier.
“Canceling events is always a difficult decision, and the LPGA values the understanding and effort of our title sponsors (Honda and HSBC) and the IMG to host incredible events for our players,” said an official statement. “The health and safety of our players, fans and everyone who works at the event is always a top priority for us.”
The events reported since the outbreak of the coronavirus, which, according to the latest figures, have killed more than 1000 people, more than 40,000 of whom are believed to be infected.
