Global coronavirus cases top 40 million

The number of coronavirus cases around the world hit 40 million on Monday, according to the tally from Johns Hopkins University.

In the U.S., daily new cases continue to rise in more than half of states. The US reported 8.2 million Covid-19 cases, along with almost 220,000 deaths.

India has the next highest number of cases at close to 7.6 million and more than 110,000 deaths.

The world recorded 40,050,902 cases and 1,113,750 deaths on Monday.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reported that the number of deaths in the European Economic Area had surpassed 200,000, with cases at 4.8 million.
