Italy reported 627 new deaths from the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours, that brings the number of total deaths to 4,032, the highest in the world.
The government has decided to use the military in order to enforce the lockdown, the president of the Lombardy region, Attilio Fontana, said.
The army has been deployed to support police patrolling streets in some regions in the attempt to avoid infractions. The government is working on more stringent measures to prevent people from leaving their homes, violating the lockdown rules.
More than 209,000 people have been infected by the coronavirus globally and more than 8,700 have died, according to the World Health Organization.
