Protests take place across Italy against new COVID-19 restrictions

Protests took place across Italy against restrictions to curb the country’s second Covid wave.

The violence was blamed on extremist agitators. Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters in Milan and Turin. In Milan, several trams were vandalized and bins were set on fire.

The scenes of unrest came after Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte ordered restaurants and bars to shut from 6:00 pm, while theatres, cinemas and gyms were ordered closed for a month.

Police said 28 people had been arrested in Milan alone.
