Russia reported on Friday 8,987 new cases of the novel coronavirus. Officials said 183 people had died in the last 24 hours.
The country rolled out a drug approved to treat patients suffering from the novel coronavirus, its state financial backer said, as the number of infections there surpassed half a million.
With 511,423 cases of the novel coronavirus, Russia has the third highest number in the world after Brazil and the United States, but has a relatively low official death toll of 6,715.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied there was anything untoward with Russia’s official coronavirus death data after the World Health Organisation said that Russia’s low death rate was “difficult to understand”.
