Thailand’s claim to have seized almost $1 billion in contraband ketamine this month was a misunderstanding after the product turned out to be a cleaning agent, Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin said.

Somsak Thepsuthin said a “technical error” in-field testing had led to the initial false claim.

“This was a misunderstanding that our agency must accept,” he told reporters. “This wasn’t a mistake. It’s new knowledge.”

Thepsuthin said testing continued. Some 66 of 475 bags had been tested by Sunday.
