Thousands of demonstrators in southern Germany protested against COVID-19 restrictions over the weekend, police said on Sunday.
Thousands of others also gathered to show support for the government’s measures against the pandemic, police added.
Police counted between 10,500 and 11,000 people taking part in the different demonstrations on Saturday. The spokesman said that the situation is calm.
Local authorities had imposed restrictions such as respecting social distancing.
Chancellor Angela Merkel said that new infections have basically been doubling monthly since June.
Germany has recorded more than 288,000 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began, with over 9,400 deaths.
