Trump signs executive order aimed at regulating social media companies

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at removing some of the legal protections given to social media platforms.

“Under new regulations, social media companies that engage in censoring or any political conduct won’t be able to keep their ‘liability shield’,” Trump said. “The order will protect free speech and rights of Americans,” he added.

Trump said the fact checks were “editorial decisions” by Twitter and amounted to political activism.
