The COVID-19 that killed more than 4,000 people is now officially a pandemic, the World Health Organization announced Wednesday.
“This is the first pandemic caused by coronavirus,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
According to the organization, the global death toll has hit 4,291, from 118,000 reported cases across 114 countries.
Eight countries — including the U.S. — are now each reporting more than 1,000 cases of COVID-19.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted during the conference that, “pandemic is not a word to use lightly or carelessly,” but added that there was still time for officials to curb growth.
